2004 ACURA TL (3rd Gen) - Review and Test Drive!

The 2004 Acura TL - first look, impressions, walk around and test drive.

~~~SPECS~~~
Year - 2004
This is the second TL I've owned - I enjoy them THAT much. Given the fact that I have some experience with them in the past, I'm also fairly knowledgeable about this car.     I got an 04’ and it’s probably the best value for your dollar. No major issues just set aside maybe $500 a year for maintenance. They go for around 5K and you get 270hp, 20/28 mpg, and top tier build quality. Honda has always made good transmissions and engine with a lot of power and capabilities. Just be mindful of the dashboard. It starts to crack through out the years due to rapid fluctuations in temp and sunlight exposure. the only way to fix it is getting a whole new dashboard, it’s an expensive job but I’d just live with it.
    • Michael Miller
      Michael Miller
      Year ago
      If there's nothing wrong with the car, I think $2k is really good. I bought my first 04 TL for $9k with around the same mileage. That was like 6 years ago though haha. Make sure to have a mechanic check it out. And pay close attention to the transmission. Feel how it shifts especially in lower gears. If it slips, that's not necessarily a sign of bad things to come, but the trans on the 04-05 models is prone to have issues. My first one went out at 175k miles. But I know of other people who've never had any issues. Just pay attention. At $2000, there's room to fix some minor things.
    My dad has an 08 with nav with 170k miles. He’s giving it to me once he hits 200k miles which will likely be in then next 8 months or so. He got it in 2009 after its 24 month lease with about 20k miles on it and the thing runs just like it did then. This is a great car and will forever go down as one of Acura’s greatest builds. He just learned how to use the manual on the automatic so I’m gonna be learning it too and the thing flies with the manual shifting although it’s only a 5 speed.
      @Michael Miller honestly these cars are the best bang for the buck now days. You can buy a decent low km Tl for under $7 grand and you cant beat that. The new tlx is beutiful but im happy with the aspec for what it is. Your car looks mint keep up the maintenance and it will serve you well.
    • Michael Miller
      Totally agree. I drove a 2018 bmw m240i the other day and it was like driving the TL 90% of the time. The extra power of the 240i was noticeable at higher rpm's, but aside from that it was an almost identical experience.
    • Michael Miller
      Michael Miller
      3 years ago
      It's a super reliable car, and fun. But just like any other used car, things can break and regular maintenance is crucial to keeping it running properly. That being said, the TL is one of the most problem free cars I've ever owned. The largest problem you may face is the transmission. It's a much bigger deal for the 2004 and 2005 models than it is for the 2008 though. Make sure to have the one you're looking at inspected by a mechanic you trust. They should be able to tell you what kind of shape the car is in mechanically
    I don't see any pin-striping on yours...I got the same car by they way...get your front lower control arms checked...this generation the engineers went with a new style of control arm that ended up being a design flaw...mevotech is a great aftermarket for the price and affordable, the oem's are pretty pricey...I got 168,000 miles on mine and about to do the timing belt kit pretty soon...Great cars...2009-2011 TL's had the same bold front grill which I really like, trying to nab one of these years next...Any who, enjoy your TL...
    • Alexander Milentis
      Alexander Milentis
      3 years ago
      I haven't had any issues with my Transmission. I think the Acura TL transmission issue has been extremely over blown. The 2nd Generation TLs had a known issue with the transmission and they had a recall on those to install the transmission fluid cooling line. With any car you are always going to have the chance of transmission issues, especially if you drive the car like a race car. But I doubt the TL has any higher chance of transmission issues than any other car out there. With that being said, you probably don't know who all owned the car before you and how they treated it, so make sure to check the transmission fluid, drive it around to see how the transmission shifts and take it to get inspected somewhere if you're serious about buying it. Good luck with the purchase!
In terms of expected maintenance, the only thing I can say for sure is the timing belt probably within the next 10-20k miles. Thanks for the comment!
    I plan on buying a 2004 TL with 120k on it, is it expensive to maintain? College student haha
    • Michael Miller
      Michael Miller
      3 years ago
      It really depends on the car's condition. According to Kelly Blue Book, fair market range for a 2004 Acura TL with 120k miles (as of today's date) is between $5,363 and $7,010. Unfortunately taxes will always be there if you buy from a dealer, and the dealer fees is how the dealership helps cover their overhead. So I wouldn't consider $6k the price of the car, that's just the total out of your pocket. There's always the possibility the dealer is ripping you off with fees though. $5k seems like a great deal, but with a price that low compared to the market I would assume there are some issues with the car. I could obviously be wrong, but most of the time you get what you pay for. More than likely the dealership is asking that far below market value for a reason. But really the only way to find out is to have a good mechanic check it out to see if there are any issues. If the car checks out, I think $5k-6k is a great price. Something else I would do if you're serious about this one is purchase the Carfax report (if the dealer doesn't provide that for you). You'll need the VIN number to do this. That way you can see how many previous owners the car has had, if it has been in any accidents, and if so the extent of the damage. I stay away from cars with rebuilt titles and major damage or structural damage. I also stay away from cars that have had a lot of previous owners because that means the car has been driven many different ways and it increases the risk of someone driving the car poorly. That's just one man's opinion though.
    • jandopineda98
      jandopineda98
      3 years ago
      Michael Miller so I went to another private dealer and the price for the car was 5k...but with fees and taxes it ran up to 6k. I live in ga. Is he charging too much?
    • Michael Miller
      Michael Miller
      3 years ago
      +jandopineda98 $4500 isn't bad especially for 120k miles. The alignment won't cost much...$90 or so depending on where you take it. Not sure about the motor mounts but those sound like they'd be more. I'd recommend taking it to a 3rd party mechanic to get a pre-purchase inspection. That way you'll know exactly what needs to be done and what doesn't. Acura will probably do it for you, but they'll charge more than say Goodyear etc.
    • jandopineda98
      jandopineda98
      3 years ago
      I went to check it out....bad motor mount, need “alignment” and a couple paint job flaws. Everything else seems fine maybe new brakes and tires down the road...they wanted 4,500. Thoughts?
    • Michael Miller
      Michael Miller
      3 years ago
      +jandopineda98 not an expensive car to maintain at all. Not sure how much an AC compressor is though. I've got another video of this car going up tomorrow and I talk a little bit about maintenance in it. I owned a 2004 TL previously to this one and the most expensive maintenance bill I had was a little over $400. Usually it was around $30 - $50
    I got my 04 WDP TL a year ago with 215k. Put a little over 5k on it and I love it! Haven't had any major issues with it other than having to replace the drivers power window module and the air intake tube.
