2022 Acura MDX | Review & Road Test

For the latest Acura MDX pricing and information:

www.kbb.com/Acura/MDX/

With the 2022 Acura MDX the brand's 3-row midsize premium SUV enters its 4th-generation. Built atop a stiffer chassis the latest MDX is longer, lower, and wider. The hood is lengthier, the bodywork chiseled, and the LED head and taillights feature this graceful chicane element.

The cabin has grown in all meaningful dimensions. Ok, 2nd-row headroom has dropped by .2 inches. But otherwise, head, leg, and shoulder space are as good or better than MDX generation 3.

As long as I’m on a dimensional trip, lemme note that cargo space is up as well. There’s a healthy 16.3 cu-ft behind the 3rd row plus an extra 1.8 cu-ft beneath this reversible cargo floor. Drop the 2nd and 3rd rows to unleash 71.4 cu-ft of hauling capacity.

One more neat functional detail, the middle 2nd-row seat is removable…like in a minivan. So, you can still access the 3rd row even if you have child seats in the outboard spots.

Like its TLX sedan kin, the MDX’s interior plushness has elevated in its latest form. Tantalizing leather, fancy-pants stitching, open-pore wood on the priciest version. The MDX is pushing the upper limit of what I’d call premium. I’m also a huge fan of the Advance Package’s 16-way seats.

Moving to infotainment, there’s a single 12.3-inch screen positioned near the driver’s natural gaze and controlled by Acura’s True Touchpad Interface.
OC Interior: In simplest terms, where you touch on the pad correlates with what is highlighted on the screen. Upper right, upper right.

It’ll take some adaptation if you’ve used competitive cursor-style touchpads. Especially since that True Touchpad philosophy doesn’t apply to Apple CarPlay, which you navigate like a traditional cursor. On the plus side, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard.

Ok, what happens when you apply the latest MDX to open tarmac? As I noted in the Acura TLX, the MDX uses a steering ratio that’s slow on-center but speeds up the further you turn the wheel. The result is an SUV that feels stable in a straight line and frisky when turning.

Supporting that friskiness is a sportier double-wishbone front suspension arrangement. The 2022 MDX is not the zenith of sportiness but there’s definitely fun potential.

Enhancing the MDX’s dynamic spirit is the optional SH-AWD system which can send up to 70% of the engine’s output to the rear wheels and 100% of that power to either wheel. By overdriving the outside rear wheel, the AWD system helps the MDX turn with elevated agility. As a bonus, adding all-wheel drive has a negligible impact on fuel economy. (19city/26hwy FWD, 19city/25hwy AWD)

Matching the MDX’s lateral charms is a compliant ride and a capable 3.5-liter V6 (290 hp, 267 lb-ft) paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

At maximum urgency, acceleration is more ‘peppy’ than blistering but you shouldn’t have any issues merging on the freeway. During normal commutes, the transmission delivers inconspicuous shifts, though floor the accelerator when cruising and there is an occasional lull while waiting for a lower gear engage. If you’d like a more active role in the transmission’s affairs, there are paddles for manual control. And, if you’re wondering, the MDX can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

For right about $47,000 ($46,900) a base Acura MDX includes blind-spot warning, 3-zone climate control, smart key access, heated 12-way front seats, a power liftgate, a range of drive modes, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and the Acurawatch suite of safety and convenience tech including full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking.

Higher trims add niceties like front-seat ventilation, an ELS 16-speaker audio system, and, like you’d find in a Honda Odyssey minivan, CabinTalk, which amplifies the driver’s voice for rear-seat passengers. If you want a 360 camera, heated steering wheel, open-pore wood trim, and a hands-free liftgate, choose the nearly $61,000 Advance package.

And if you demand all-wheel drive, it’s $2,000 on the lower trims but comes standard with the A-Spec and Advance packages.

I should also mention there is a racy MDX Type S variant featuring standard all-wheel drive and the same 3-liter Turbocharged V6 found in the Acura TLX Type S sedan (355hp, 354 lb-ft).

On the other hand, if want a sportier-looking MDX, minus any real performance enhancements, the roughly $57,000 A-Spec package is waiting.

Among the competitive set are the Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, Lexus RX-L, BMW X5, and ooh let’s not forget the lovely Genesis GV80. Among that set, you can find more luxurious and more powerful choices but the Acura MDX offers an interesting blend of value, minivan-like functionality, and yeah, even a little excitement.

I love my 2004 MDX Technology. 184,000 miles, and drives like it is brand new! It drives like my dad's 2011 Range Rover Supercharged! And the sound system is phenomenal with Bose Surround sound!! Plus it has a 5 star crash rating, weighs 6300 pounds! Gets 28-30MPG on the tollway, and has VTEC, and 284 HP! I named him Maximus. I had bought Maximus when I was 15 myself. I had mowed over a hundred lawns, trimmed countless trees, and worked my butt off! It was well worth it to own such a phenomenal vehicle! Now I had just turned 21, and Maximus is doing fantastically, and still drives like new! Even at 191,000 miles! That's my Acura story.

I am going to post this everywhere I can, because I am going crazy. This is meant only for you - Honda/Acura. There's some tough love down below, so please listen. Who is in charge of the design decisions at Honda/Acura? That person should be immediately terminated. BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Lexus etc now ALL offer touchscreens in addition to whatever other stupid option they think is "smart". Those companies - after DECADES of stubborness and stupidity - finally realized, that a touchscreen should be the default option for interacting with an infotainment system. Once that is in place, then u can feel free to waste the company's research budget on some other excessively idiotic, proprietary and redundant method like "true touch". Uggggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I almost puked when I went from using my galaxy s21, to interacting with the disgusting "true touch" - in a parking lot. 99.999999999% of drivers setup their infotainment system first while PARKED!!!!!!!, then they get onto the road. If i need to make changes while driving, I just use the voice control. Not STUPID, ANNOYING, DISGUSTING, FRUSTRATING "true touch". Summary: Exterior design: A+++++++++++ Interior design: A+++++++++++ No touchscreen: F----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have to go take a walk to calm down.

And if you thought you were gonna go fast on the Spec-S (or whatever the turbo version will be), you'll still be disappointing in finding out that these splendid machines are limited at 115MPH!!!! I'm better off with an entry level (enter German SUV here). Also, no torque vectoring for the front wheels, still. This SUV needs to go back to the drawing board V/r, "a prior Integra, Type-S, & MXD x2 owner"

@Farhan Usmani I know it is written everywhere even on Wikipedia to be the fourth generation. Applying the simplest method that makes sense will show that the 2017-2020 design could not be just a facelift of the 2014-2016 model. It is a total change in the design and shape. Even the bolt pattern of the wheels changed from 114.3x5 (2014-2016) to 120x5 (2017-2020). The facelift will be the change from 2007-2009 years to the 2010-2013 years. I am not sure if you are able to follow what I am saying or not !!!

The Genesis Gv80 is a World Class Luxury SUV. Which competes with cars even above the Acura MDX. The GV80 even goes head to head with the Bentley Bentayga which were both designed by the same designer Sangyup Lee. I do not hate the 2022 Acura MDX. I believe the acura MDX is a good looking car. The Genesis Gv80 is better than the 2022 Acura Mdx. The MDX looks too much like a Mazda which is not a bad thing. If you want to stay in denial about this then that is your opinion. And it is perfectly fine. I Respect your opinion. Again, I do not hate the 2022 Acura Mdx. I believe that it is a great luxury car. But when compared to the Genesis Gv80, the 2022 Acura MDX comes short. The Genesis Gv80 is a more luxuriously built Machine. I thank you for reading my comment.

@Jack Wright I completely agree with you and understand what you have said Brother. I can also agree with you on Lexus. The Front end grills on all of their Cars looks Straight up like the Predators Faces. Which is something you and i dont want to see. I completely agree with you that the 2022 Mdx is not worth the price. It is a Luxury car but lacks those true Luxury touches/finishes and details that makes a Luxury car a True Luxury car. I completely agree with what you have said.

@Brandon Blooming OK, I can't speak for others and haven't taken a poll but certainly I'm sure many like the Genesis grill. My buddy has the sedan and loves it. But the grill is too "bling" for me and yes, has a bit of a Bentley feel. I don't like the lexus grill either. I hate the bow tie look but some people must like it. I wish this MDX had nicer finishes. It doesn't seem worth the money. Might as well buy a Mazda but I don't want a Mazda. I want a luxury suv that will last. I have a Volvo XC90 but will get rid of it before the warranty expires. Don't trust it.

@Jack Wright Well the 2022 Acura Mdx looks straight up like a Mazda. But it is good for you to understand too that not many people share your views about the Genesis Grill. I just want to tell you my friend. That i respect your opinion. The Genesis brand is a World Class Luxury Brand with astounding potentials. I do believe they need to create their own separated dealerships across the world. Because it is hurting them. I have respect for Acura as a brand too. I do not particularly hate any Luxury Brand or any Motor company. I thank you for taking the time to read my comments.

Have you heard this, it is not spam, but the most important thing you'll ever read. If you die today will you go to heaven? Have you ever lied, stolen, used God's name as a curse word (O-M-G)? According to God's law, you're guilty, your headed for hell, ignorance will not be an excuse... But wait, God loves you, he made a way out for you, God's son Jesus died paying for your sin. God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him will not die but have everlasting life. John 3:16 God is warning the world. End Time prophesies are jumping off the pages of the Bible, plagues, violence, scoffers, government control, earthquakes, fires, floods, people will be lovers of themselves, money, lovers of pleasure rather than God, evil will be called good and good called evil, sexual immorality, rampant adultery, fornication, abuse... the ultimate in child abuse mommies killing their babies in selfish child sacrifice (abortion), World leaders are prepping for a One-World order, government, religion (please don’t take a number on your forehead or right hand, read Revelation a number means no heaven, and there's only one alternative) The government is also prepping to have you believe that UFO's are real... Soon the believers in Christ/Christians will be taken up, away with God, the world will be in turmoil, then the antichrist will come and fix everything, everyone will love him, he will deceive many... then the tribulation will start, life on earth will be horrific. Today if you hear God whispering to your heart please respond before it's too late. Say a humble prayer, pour your heart out to God, receive Jesus as your savior, believe God raised Jesus from the dead (Romans 10:9), and repent of your sins, you are now saved by grace! Ephesians 4:8-9(NOT BY WORKS)

Nobody I’m aware of offers second row ventilated seats Palisade is amazing value and luxury nappa leather, their execution of tech is very well done and intuitive. I wish they offered wireless Apple CarPlay one small gripe. If you want a functional third row not just a place for small kids there aren’t many options like the Palisade out there without stepping up to the full size SUV class.

ok, I'm getting tired of Acura putting those superman diamond shape grills on the front, to me it looks very gaudy and it shows them that they lack innovation and can't find out another fancy look for their luxury lineup, so they just cookie cut the RDX and TLX, and say what a big success we have. and could you PLEASE kill those mouse pads for crap sakes. moving your finger on those things is no different that playing on your iPhone while driving. it's safety hazard

Awesome awesome 👍 SUV, thanks for sharing Mica, if anyone wants a Audi get one, you want a Mercedes get one, you want a Volvo get one, but if you want the MDX or any other Honda products get one or more...we need to have difference between manufacturers vehicles for choice, and their are different heights for males and females, different limbs length, different weight, different driving skills, different experiences, etc they quick reviews of so many different cars don't give full picture of any vehicles and most of them misunderstand Honda products and to us as customers laugh and think they are stupid... it's too bad motomantv doesn't give Honda products reviews for showing real technical side. And of course Chris Harris for real driving dynamics for especially the cars.

I just find it extremely irresponsible to spend that much money on a car that isn't electric. With the gas and maintenance etc the cost to own is just not responsible for a depreciable 'asset'.

@Jack Wright Yes. Consumer Reports gives the reliability a 2/5 rating for the 2022. Note all Honda company products have reliability issues.

People say it looks like a Mazda. Kind of but the rear end looks more like a new version of the first gen RDX.
