2022 Acura MDX Advance Super Handling All-Wheel Drive Ups The Luxury And Sport

It’s easy to forget that Acura’s MDX was the first crossover to sport three rows of seating. 20 years later, the market is thick with competitors. So Honda’s premium division gave the 4th generation a double-wishbone front suspension, a new architecture with body rigidity improved by an impressive 32% and a lot more luxury in the cabin. The result is a much better MDX. Tom Voelk looks at an Advance model that comes standard with true torque vectoring Super Handling All-Wheel Drive and finds a family hauler that appeals to the entire clan. Well, there is the user interface…

Tom, WOW, 20% don't Test Drive the vehicles they are buying ????? I guess COVID may have something to do with that stat. Well, if those potential buyers don't test drive THIS SUV, they are making a big mistake. Without being prejudiced, i just a new 2022 MDX Advance in Fathom Blue Pearl with Graystone leather interior!!!!! This is a spectacular SUV, a if you compare it to the "luxury" competition, for what you get, SH-AWD ( one of the best in the business), fantastic ELS Sound system, road gripping manners and a responsive 10 sp AT, room and extremely comfortable front seats, a great Heads Up Display, Remote Start that ties into climate controls including the front windshield deicer, heated sterring wheel, and much more, It is the best Value by far. I'm a Shopper, always was.... Appliances, stereos, garage door openers, you name it, and certainly cars. I looked at all the Acura MDX reviews ( yours is a very good one), test drove tge RDX and the MDX, Telluride ( too Floaty IMO, and didn't like the silver climate control buttons, but really liked the huge Touch Screen InfoT. ), the new Pathfinder, a 2020 BMW X5, but after driving the 2022 MDX , I took advantage of an early lease termination come on from Acura plus the $1K Loyalty money to Acura customers, and traded my 2019 MDX. Even with the Equity in my current lease of $2500 and the Loyalty $$$$, paying the taxes & fees up front, and still resulting in a slightly higher lease payment per month, i went for it. Hey, after working in business for 48 Years, now retired at 69, Why Wait to enjoy the fruits of your Labor. FYI, the primary reason that I took the plunge, after receiving the enticing early termination offers via Acura, was tge fact that the SUV was Soooo much better than the predecessor. If it was a medicore upgrade, i would have passed and waited until June 2022. I don't use the term LOVE for a car ( Love is for Family), so I'll say that I really LIKE this car!!!!!

So let me get this straight. Not only is it 1 MPG less than the previous model, therefore guzzling gas more and polluting the environment more, but HONDA will put out a Type S version of this?! Which will be even more horrendous for the environment?!?! What the heck are they thinking?! Why ISN'T there a hybrid, PHEV and electric version of this vehicle?! And don't EVEN get me started on the lack of an off-road mode. Yes, it's the most beautiful iteration of this model on the outside, but one of the ugliest vehicles on the inside. HONDA is just going to fall by the wayside while other companies are electrifying their fleet. Heck, even JEEP has started electrifying their vehicles!!! And they've had some of the worst gas mileage stats. Toyota even has a negative emission vehicle with the Mirai that takes it one step further. Honda doesn't even come close to competing with them. The 2022 model year should have been their chance to step up and innovate by electrifying. They've done nothing. They deserve to go bankrupt and be held accountable for the climate crisis our planet is now going through. Bravo HONDA, bravo.

Good review Tom. Just paid cash for my Pearl Red and I was most concerned about my wife of 53 years, as you know being married and buying a luxury SUV the wife should be involved. Well, I test drove every luxury SUV and the 2022 MDX is by far the best for overall price to value comparison, safety, long standing quality of service and engine design, (Honda makes great engines), looks inside and out with new design is off the charts nice! Having a naturally aspirated Big 6, (not concerns about turbos from 4's) just fine! A more powerful set-up is coming maybe by late fall, but this engine is terrific for the weight ratio. Great 10 speed transmission with wonderful fast responsive shifts working with the engine at correct times. So many plusses with this MDX you must just drive it with the European models and even the Genesis, which may not have the tried and true long term quality control that Acura has. Tiger Woods sure did not come out in one piece, but I give him 10 for that flying move and fast stop! Many of the brands are just trying to push the buttons and the "snob appeal" gets many who do not do their homework by driving everything and looking at everything. They buy on emotion and want to impress their neighbors, but wait until that three year warranty runs out and you have to order parts on a BMW, Mercedes, Audi or Volvo, etc. Also, have you looked at the cost of just oil changes, five times more money on them. WHY? Scotty Kilmer will tell you why they cost so much and avoid them at all cost. The MDX is the best of all world's and I even noticed on the gas gap it says regular, or premium either is just fine! Very interesting when you see the difference from price over time using regular, etc. It adds up, but then why worry if you can afford a MDX or the others. Life is short. Also, life is a bitch and then you die, and also don't worry, be happy. For the next ten years just trade up every three years of so!

Pertaining to the fuel choice for the new MDX, the manual says 91 Octane or higher is preferable. It was the same on my 2019 MDX. I found that if I used Premium ( BP, Shell, Mobil Exxon, mostly), which was 90% or more of the time, i would achieve about 1 more MPG, in similar driving patterns. I see a few reviews mentions it is OK to use Regular gas. Regular gas is 87 Octane , at least here in the NY Metro area. I know that Uncle Joey has helped to increase gas prices by over $1 in a matter of a few months. But after a slight break in of use, I will try doing the same comparison. There is plethora of information, right or wrong, that using premium gas is a waste of money. However, I'm a firm believer of top of the line products. Premuim gas is a top of the line product. IMHO, many , if not all manufacturers, put all their technologies into the top of the line product ( cars, appliances, stereos, you name it), and then Dumb it down to the base products. It may be the same with gasoline and the additives used. My 2 cents.

Holy Mackerel Jon, my exact Feelings. Just got my new MDX Advance in Fathom Blue Pearl / Graystone interior ( I looked at the Red, but none would be availbale in the immediate future with shortages with all cars). It us an Outstanding vehicle. Your dissertation is complete!!! I haven't been this excited over a new car in a long time. I leased mine, for 3 years, and now being retired since May 2021, after working 48 Years ( with Years worth of time Commuting in the NY Metro area), mine will have very low miles in 3 years. Based on health, and car market factors, although it usually isn't the finacially correct thing to do, I may Buy it at the residual value of $38K. That's why I will Baby this car !! Be well, and Good !uck with your new Luxury SUV . BTW, I am married 47 years this November, but I didn't bring the wifey along. She can be a PIA with these things. Cars are not her thing... she has her 2016 CRV and is very happy with that. I have the patience for negotiating , she doesn't. So I figured why bring a potential Dissuator along....haha. an awful lot of CX9 on the outside, very pretty on the inside. Can we start a petition to ban piano black and to get Acura to subcontract their infotainment to Kia so that the interface would just work. 60 thousand dollars seems an awful lot for a plusher wagon with the Pilot's drivetrain. If it were the turbo at this price I'd feel differently. Great review, just like always. Thanks.

@wongchai807 40% faster than what? For 60,000 I’d rather have 10k in my pocket and a Telluride. Or 15k and a CX-9. If you like to drive you’d not hate on the German cars and honestly - the extra luxury features that you’re getting instead of driving enjoyment are terrible infotainment. At least it has a very nice radio. But this is another sporty SUV that’s not sporty. It’s just expensive and designed to impress the girls at yoga class. (They all have Tellurides) The turbo might be awesome though. But it will probably be 70k and will be as mechanically complex as the Germans. I think this car is dumb.

@David Street also in house 10speed transmission that is 40%quicker downshift and 30% quicker upshifts. So you can continue to hate but honda is a much better product than germans for the price s by far. Now they made thier interior more upscale, just need to update the infotainment.

@David Street last gen, acura is on a totally different platform now. Why would thry develop a whole new chassis just to put thr pilot on? Lol its ment for a sportier ride, way better chassis. Its thier flagship vehicle. Your just assuming they will share the same platform for the new pilot. There isn't any news of that. At 60k you can't get what you get on a German vehicle lol it would be 10-20k more. The German brands don't come close to reliability your just buying it for the brand.

    • David Street

      David Street

@wongchai807 The last gen was a Pilot. You get 2 seconds to guess where they will get the next Pilot platform from… The Pilot is a “nice” durable family truckster with the worst suspension tuning of any car I’ve ever had. But let’s be real. This is a fancy Honda with pretty interior materials. If you have this much $$& get the German car. Or get an electric car. This is too fancy to be practical and too practical to be cool. In musical terms… that’s Nickelback.

    • wongchai807

      wongchai807

This is not on the pilot platform. Its on its own completely different one. Better chassis, 30% more rigidity, bigger, longer. Best in the business sound system, best in the business sh-awd. A loaded pilot is already 40k plus.

Probably one of the cleanest, well produced, and ‘most excellent’ of all reviews that I’ve EVER seen. Being a long time LA Times employee I have to hand a good choice award to NY Times. This review is very well done... However.... Being a car guy that has touched hundreds of cars. The TRUE TOUCHPAD is the easiest system to learn on the entire lot! I’m sorry, if someone can’t learn this system in ten minutes, they should buy a Hyundai Excel! I’m serious! I get SO annoyed by every reviewer just copying others and saying ‘the infotainment system; hard to understand’ PLEEEEEEASE! C’mon, really? I taught myself this system driving down the freeway going ‘65’ mph. Nothing to find, nothing to search for. AAAAUUUUGGGHH! It is the easiest system on the planet!!! Other than the ‘copy of others on some elements’ this review is EXCELLENT! I mean really well done!

@Driven Car Reviews With Tom Voelk Sad to say the LA TIMES is a shell of what it used to be. Extremely poor upper top level management over the past 20 years has pretty much destroyed any element of usefulness the paper/news outlet had. I totally understand your review and thank you for acknowledging. You are right, some of the ‘reviewers’ are still figuring out how to use pagers. I’m serious! It’s to take on technology people, it’s not going away. The LAT had award winners in every review category; food, cars, movies, etc. Now, forget it... But your review was still top notch above all the others. ACURA is NOT it’s sister brand just wrapped in leather (Infiniti, Lexus) it’s a performance class of cars.

Glad you figured it out so quickly Matthew. I'll stand by my observation. And as a media guy, you understand that I can't just say, "It's easy, you'll figure it out", I need to consider the audience as a whole and be responsible. I think I gave the system a very fair shake considering some of the luddites that have slammed it. It's good, not great. And honestly, why the hell isn't LA Times of all publications doing car review videos? NYT, doesn't do reviews any more, that's their reasoning.

Like Nissan, Acura is beginning to come around to a well-executed design language. Proportions on the new MDX are improved, but not quite there yet. Like the new Civic, the front ends are too bulbous and heavy. Lines and body creases really work without being too fussy. Honda used to be a class-leading engine developer but that reputation has lost some luster over the years. Surprising that the engineers and design teams don't seem as innovative as they once were. Like Toyota, I think they need to consider a standard hybrid-based architecture for their top sellers. I'm still waiting for someone to have the courage (and financial smarts) to consider a carbon-fiber (or all-aluminum) based platform for a mainstream model. That would make a statement. Still, the MDX would have to be in the top 5 for anyone wanted a lux/3-row/SUV because it is so well-balanced.

I just bought one 3 weeks ago and absolutely love it. It does play very well with Apple car play and the interactive pad is super easy even when you're driving. I laugh when people say the track pad is cumbersome or will take some time to get used to because i actually had zero issues even when i test drove this.

On ELS: when I was 15 the first thing I did when my Mom bought her 2007 TL was listen to Steely Dan's Gaucho from front to back. ELS/Panasonic make seriously excellent car audio systems (especially compared to her 1996 Accord's system). Great review as always!

I never understood why Honda keeps Acura around. It's not really competition for the real luxury brands. Compared to a Genesis GV80 this thing looks like Kmart. The sales have been dropping the last few years and the price $ 62,000 for that! I think Acuras fading away and for good reason.

😆😆 acura never was a luxury brand. They are a premium brand now they are high premium/luxury now. Always been the sporty affordable premium brand. They never competed with benz, bmw, audi maybe lexus. Thats why non of thier cars are even 70k 😆. Acura is going no where, now they're stealing bmw,Mercedes customers because of thier over priced non reliable vehicles. People just buy those cars for the brand now.

@wongchai807I have been Honda fanboy for 3 decades and looking back I have made bad choices buying Honda/Acura products instead of Toyota/Lexus. Lexus and Toyota have far superior body panels, engines and transmission and interior body panels age gracefully.

@Arthur H I just came out of a bmw that bought new. I was expecting the "ultimate driving machine" from bmw and was very disappointed. The new mdx is very very smooth (unlike the bmw i just had) and rivals the smoothness of the 2 mercedes that i had prior to the bmw. The mpg for the acura is anything but "abysmal" it's in line with the others maybe minus 1 or 2 mpg but seriously big deal. I am extremely happy with my mdx

I’m not seeing this I’m approaching 4000 miles on my Advanced and it’s FAR noisier than an X5. It’s not even remotely comparable. The biggest issue aside from the poor implementations of the vehicles AI systems and head unit is the MPG is abysmal. It’s shocking how bad it is especially comparing to the outgoing model.

@Driven Car Reviews With Tom Voelk I appreciate that, but we know full well the Japanese are experts at hybrids, it just seems lazy and irresponsible for luxury cars in 2022 not to be better for the environment. People clearly have the money to spend on these gas guzzlers.

I'm a huge fan of EVs and such, but not everyone has the ability to go electric. Plenty of people have no place to charge at home. The infrastructure needs to develop. Also, supply of EVs. Getting better but no way could EV production ramp up as fast as needed.

12:08 it’s press car as witnessed by the 3421 license plate. It’s not an actual production model. This one has not been quality control checked and was rushed out for press reviews. It’s not the same as what you’ll get at a dealer.

Others would say that press cars are the most scrutinized vehicles produced to make a good impression. Usually they're just production vehicles, simple as that.
