2022 Acura MDX Advance Super Handling All-Wheel Drive Ups The Luxury And Sport

It’s easy to forget that Acura’s MDX was the first crossover to sport three rows of seating. 20 years later, the market is thick with competitors. So Honda’s premium division gave the 4th generation a double-wishbone front suspension, a new architecture with body rigidity improved by an impressive 32% and a lot more luxury in the cabin. The result is a much better MDX. Tom Voelk looks at an Advance model that comes standard with true torque vectoring Super Handling All-Wheel Drive and finds a family hauler that appeals to the entire clan. Well, there is the user interface…

Good review Tom. Just paid cash for my Pearl Red and I was most concerned about my wife of 53 years, as you know being married and buying a luxury SUV the wife should be involved. Well, I test drove every luxury SUV and the 2022 MDX is by far the best for overall price to value comparison, safety, long standing quality of service and engine design, (Honda makes great engines), looks inside and out with new design is off the charts nice! Having a naturally aspirated Big 6, (not concerns about turbos from 4's) just fine! A more powerful set-up is coming maybe by late fall, but this engine is terrific for the weight ratio. Great 10 speed transmission with wonderful fast responsive shifts working with the engine at correct times. So many plusses with this MDX you must just drive it with the European models and even the Genesis, which may not have the tried and true long term quality control that Acura has. Tiger Woods sure did not come out in one piece, but I give him 10 for that flying move and fast stop! Many of the brands are just trying to push the buttons and the "snob appeal" gets many who do not do their homework by driving everything and looking at everything. They buy on emotion and want to impress their neighbors, but wait until that three year warranty runs out and you have to order parts on a BMW, Mercedes, Audi or Volvo, etc. Also, have you looked at the cost of just oil changes, five times more money on them. WHY? Scotty Kilmer will tell you why they cost so much and avoid them at all cost. The MDX is the best of all world's and I even noticed on the gas gap it says regular, or premium either is just fine! Very interesting when you see the difference from price over time using regular, etc. It adds up, but then why worry if you can afford a MDX or the others. Life is short. Also, life is a bitch and then you die, and also don't worry, be happy. For the next ten years just trade up every three years of so!

an awful lot of CX9 on the outside, very pretty on the inside. Can we start a petition to ban piano black and to get Acura to subcontract their infotainment to Kia so that the interface would just work. 60 thousand dollars seems an awful lot for a plusher wagon with the Pilot's drivetrain. If it were the turbo at this price I'd feel differently. Great review, just like always. Thanks.

I'm an enthusiast. In the past year and a half, I bought a 2016 Camaro SS manual, 2019 Mazda 3 hatch, 2021 Audi SQ5. Didn't test drive any of em. Love all 3 in terms of ride, handling, nvh, dynamics. I research the crap out of them before buying though, and travel quite a bit to get the deal I want on the exact car I want. I bought the Camaro 15 months ago, and I can TRADE it in now for $10k more than what I paid for it. $1k more on the Mazda.

Probably one of the cleanest, well produced, and ‘most excellent’ of all reviews that I’ve EVER seen. Being a long time LA Times employee I have to hand a good choice award to NY Times. This review is very well done... However.... Being a car guy that has touched hundreds of cars. The TRUE TOUCHPAD is the easiest system to learn on the entire lot! I’m sorry, if someone can’t learn this system in ten minutes, they should buy a Hyundai Excel! I’m serious! I get SO annoyed by every reviewer just copying others and saying ‘the infotainment system; hard to understand’ PLEEEEEEASE! C’mon, really? I taught myself this system driving down the freeway going ‘65’ mph. Nothing to find, nothing to search for. AAAAUUUUGGGHH! It is the easiest system on the planet!!! Other than the ‘copy of others on some elements’ this review is EXCELLENT! I mean really well done!

@Driven Car Reviews With Tom Voelk Sad to say the LA TIMES is a shell of what it used to be. Extremely poor upper top level management over the past 20 years has pretty much destroyed any element of usefulness the paper/news outlet had. I totally understand your review and thank you for acknowledging. You are right, some of the ‘reviewers’ are still figuring out how to use pagers. I’m serious! It’s to take on technology people, it’s not going away. The LAT had award winners in every review category; food, cars, movies, etc. Now, forget it... But your review was still top notch above all the others. ACURA is NOT it’s sister brand just wrapped in leather (Infiniti, Lexus) it’s a performance class of cars.

Glad you figured it out so quickly Matthew. I'll stand by my observation. And as a media guy, you understand that I can't just say, "It's easy, you'll figure it out", I need to consider the audience as a whole and be responsible. I think I gave the system a very fair shake considering some of the luddites that have slammed it. It's good, not great. And honestly, why the hell isn't LA Times of all publications doing car review videos? NYT, doesn't do reviews any more, that's their reasoning.

Like Nissan, Acura is beginning to come around to a well-executed design language. Proportions on the new MDX are improved, but not quite there yet. Like the new Civic, the front ends are too bulbous and heavy. Lines and body creases really work without being too fussy. Honda used to be a class-leading engine developer but that reputation has lost some luster over the years. Surprising that the engineers and design teams don't seem as innovative as they once were. Like Toyota, I think they need to consider a standard hybrid-based architecture for their top sellers. I'm still waiting for someone to have the courage (and financial smarts) to consider a carbon-fiber (or all-aluminum) based platform for a mainstream model. That would make a statement. Still, the MDX would have to be in the top 5 for anyone wanted a lux/3-row/SUV because it is so well-balanced.

The new mdx is very very smooth (unlike the bmw i just had) and rivals the smoothness of the 2 mercedes that i had prior to the bmw. The mpg for the acura is anything but "abysmal" it's in line with the others maybe minus 1 or 2 mpg but seriously big deal. I am extremely happy with my mdx

I'm a huge fan of EVs and such, but not everyone has the ability to go electric. Plenty of people have no place to charge at home. The infrastructure needs to develop. Also, supply of EVs. Getting better but no way could EV production ramp up as fast as needed.

12:08 it’s press car as witnessed by the 3421 license plate. It’s not an actual production model. This one has not been quality control checked and was rushed out for press reviews. It’s not the same as what you’ll get at a dealer.

@Driven Car Reviews With Tom Voelk I wish that was the case but press cars are rushed out before actual production models and haven’t been through final quality control checks.

Others would say that press cars are the most scrutinized vehicles produced to make a good impression. Usually they're just production vehicles, simple as that.

I think Lexus deserves a chance to redo the RX-L before people plop money on a MDX. The current RX-L was clearly an afterthought, the next one is said to be a much better vehicle. I like Acura, but if luxury is the argument, my money’s on Lexus.

@Madison TSX the GV80 is also much more expensive so of course it’s nicer. For the money an MDX is a much better buy than a RX at the moment. Have you test driven one?

@AFCompany The MDX is certainly more attractive than the RX... but other than a slightly less fussy track pad system and a new shiny design, there is nothing about the MDX (as far as technology, efficiency, and build quality) that I can say is “better” than the old RX. A genesis GV80, for example, is a car that is clearly better. I just don’t think that the MDX really moved the bar.

As of right now Acura is producing more luxurious cars than Lexus. Lexus has a lot of dated models. The RX looks extremely dated and less luxurious compared to the MDX. Why would someone wait around for Lexus to catch up. People are gonna buy what’s available when they need a new car.

The automotive industry is ruthless, Lexus deserves only what it earns. The L was a bandaid, I would certainly hope the next gen is an improvement.

Great review. We have a 2012 Mdx advance with 180 thousand miles which is the best looking i think. We have kept it coz of the SHAWD which makes it fun to drive around corners and engine note from the V6. The hood on the new one is a touch too long. Also acura make the screen a touch screen pls!

Probably because of all the drivers on the road who have no regard for keeping right except to pass.

Nice update. MDX a serious contender for us as nobody will let me buy a mini-van. For the money it looks like a great value kind of not German SUV lux but worth the premium over say a Highlander or even the aged Lexus GX 460. Seattle scenery so cool too.

I was cross shopping an X5, a GV80 and the new MDX..........Actually I have been eyeing X5’s for years but never pulled the trigger on purchasing one because of the reliability, versatility, price and option packaging. This time around it came down to a choice between the GV80 Platinum and the MDX Advance from my 2016 MDX Advance. My selection boiled down to a few factors: 1. I like the exterior styling of the MDX over the GV80. Just a little too much chrome and the grill is a little too large for my taste. 2. The interior of the GV80 might be a little better than the MDX but not by much. They basically use the same materials but differently. I did not like the GV80 infortainment system. The touch screen is just too far to reach comfortably and the circle pad was cumbersome. The MDX touchpad really is a better option contrary to popular opinion. 3. The 290 V6 in the MDX is a better option than the 2.5 liter turbo 4. It is quieter and more refined. It will be interesting to see how the Type S 3.0 V6 Turbo will stack up against the 3.5 V6 Turbo of the GV80. I think for most people the reliable naturally aspirated 290 horsepower V6 has more than enough power. 4. You probably can guess I went with the MDX advance. The versatility of the MDX was the deciding factor. That said I was very close to pulling the trigger on a white GV80 premium with the saddle and blue interior. I didn’t know how rare that combination was since you really can’t find them anywhere right now. The dealer was asking for sticker at $72000 which again is rare since I hear people paying above sticker now. I’m happy with my MDX purchase it runs great and has the most comfortable seats in the segment IMO.

The GV80 will be twin turbo while Honda went cheap with a single 3.0l turbo.

While 7 adults won't fit in an Acura NSX, I've personally seen 4 people (myself among them) squeezed into a mid 80's Toyota MR2.

Another great review. That trackpad ruins the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay experience. Too bad, because the rest of the vehicle is amazing. Why would anyone spend this much money on a wonky infotainment system that takes time to learn and even then isn't as good as a touchscreen? C'mon, Acura! Complexity is not luxury.

They seem to have abandoned Sport-Hybrid, which had the active dampers. The bad compatibility with Apple CarPlay is a deal breaker for me. The SH-AWD models drive so well, and our Sport-Hybrid MDX drove amazing.

MDX looks great, especially in Performance Red over Parchment. Good thing that the track pad allows users to set up favs in each corner and the ambient lighting looks fine. At least we know everything will work on this & the GV80 after 175k miles ! ..Germans and Swedes =💸 Great job as usual Tom 👏🏽 & I appreciate you shouting out the camera dude that works with you 👏🏽
