Acura TLX VS Lexus IS comparison // Which one would you choose??

This is a Motormouth couple car review of the Acura TLX and Lexus IS. Both of these compact premium sedans have been updated for 2021. The Acura TLX comes with a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a 10 speed automatic transmission producing 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. The Type S is coming this spring and will have a 3L turbocharged V6 engine with 355 horsepower & 354 lb-ft of torque. The TLX is priced between $43,990 CAD / $37,500 USD to $51,690 CAD / $46,300 USD depending on trim levels. The Lexus IS comes with 3 engines but, the most popular is the
IS 300 AWD: 3.5L V6 with a 6 speed automatic transmission, 260 horsepower, 236 lb-ft of torque. The Lexus IS 300 AWD starts at $43,400 CAD / $41,000 USD. Keep in mind; Canada and the US have different trim offerings, which reflects the pricing. When it comes to standard features, the TLX gets a power moon roof, a 10.25” infotainment screen, heated front seats, 18” wheels, Apple Carplay & Android Auto. The IS 300 AWD also comes with these features, but gets an 8” infotainment screen and no moon roof as standard. You have to move up to the next trim to get the moon roof and if want the bigger 10.3” infotainment screen, you’ll have to go up a few trims. It is great Acura is giving buyers the larger screen and moon roof as standard. The Lexus IS basically got a refresh, the engines are the same and the interior is similar with the exception of a new 10.3” screen; it’s clean, comfortable and familiar. The TLX on the other hand is all new, new platform, new engine and modern styling to the exterior and interior. I certainly enjoy driving both of them. The Lexus is comfortable and smooth, but the TLX feels a little more dynamic & fun. With the Type S arriving in the spring with more power, it’s definitely going to give the IS a run for its money. When it comes to fuel economy, the Acura TLX is the winner, but not by much.

So how do you decide which car to buy? Looks, power, budget, standard features, reliability or brand loyalty?

Update the interior extend the back and give 3 to 4 more inches in hight so you have more leg and head room and I'd pick the lexus all day and for acura get rid of that push start gear shifting 🤢 and get better seats but I'd almost go with the Acura only for the space you have in the vehicle cause let's face that lexus is a 2 door. Children would feel comfortable not an adult

I think it's a smart idea to include Instagram comments. That said, actually respond to what they say. Make them part of your conversation, rather than reading them and just moving on to your next point. Also, I think it would introduce some dynamism to your footage if you are driving while you discuss the cars. The human eye is stimulated by motion, even if it's just the background blurring past the windows while you chat.

The TLX is not touchscreen. All IS350 are F Sports. I chose the TLX, its a better deal. To get the bigger screen and the better audio system on the IS350. It will cost about 3-5K more.

Acura needs to 1. Attach the rear of the 2020 Acura TLX PMC edition to the 2021 Acura TLX 2. Replace the push button shifter with the gear stick from the 2021 Acura ILX.

I just bought yesterday the IS350 F2 after I consulted and viewed a lot of documentation, ACURA videos for many, many hours. Finally and of course I tested: Acura TLX, Genesys G70, Kia Stinger, Subaru Legacy GT Premier, Audi A5 (and I will see also the S60 (T5 and T6) even if I already purchased the Lexus). I'm in Canada. I want to mention that there is a lot of disinformation on the Internet or influencer that are not prepared for the real presentations and knowledge. It is not the case with the Motormouth channel - for this particular review it was very easy for me to have quick and direct information from Lexus Canada site, so maybe more details not found on the site would be welcomed. Comparing with: - Genesys G70 - I'm 6.3 feet (189cm) tall and it is so small and once I'm in the driver position, nobody can go and sit in the back - shame! I just not continued to test it, because not interested at all. The next level G80 - well above my budget. - Acura TLX (The A Spec or the Elite Trim) - it has smaller space than IS in the back (even if the specs say that is not the case, the fact that you have longer place in the front lets a little more space in the back for the IS), the audio system is very good, the control for the display is a shame and the same thing for the Turbo lag - I cannot stand it - it is so bad done and the 10 speed are too, too much. The interior looks good, it is full loaded and it stays very good (but not the best) on the road. For me it was a deception with the engine. Honda is quicker and muscular than this one (!). - Kia Stinger - very good also looking car, also full loaded (even more than Acura). The power is more, but not feels like a 365HP bi turbo, it feels a little less. It has a good handling but it shakes after a thigh turn at higher speed (rolling). The feeling of the interior with all the bels and whistles feels..cheap, even with all the leather. The same impression for 3 people involved in the test of the car. Something else to consider: the knowledge and the quality of agents has to be changed if Kia wants to go in the good direction - very personal opinion of mine. Still, some turbo lag. Subaru Legacy GT Premier - what a wonderful surprise: I'm not at all a fan of the CVT, but it works well (well, not at any engine speeds). It was the last in my list (not being considered an entry-level luxury car) - but I like the interior and the quality, even more than Acura - not to mention the interior space - more than all the others. The handling was very, vey good and for me better than for Stinger. I'm sure than in snow will also be better. The turbo lag far better than on Acura. - A5 - enough space for me, very fine interior, almost exceptional handling. The 260HP engine feels more powerful than the same power from Acura or Subaru and the smallest turbo lag. It is not for the Canadian roads - or maybe for younger audience that can stand to feel every inch of the road, every small or big hole. I felt my knees and my kidneys - 50 years old in good shape and with some extensive experience. It was the only but very important issue that prevented me to consider it. Other than this, hat down. I choose IS350 - despite the 6 speeds, despite missing some bells and whistles (no HUD, no heated seats in the back (in all the trims), no wireless charger and no real leather (but exceptional seats). The new touch screen that works well also with the trackpad, will satisfy, I think both worlds - people who love or hate one system or another. The handling experience and the engine was all I wanted more than the rest. Me, my son (23 - and Charger V8 owner) and my wife where instantly in love with the car. Even if some people will say that is aging, I didn't like the turbo lag in all the other cars. People speak the better torque for the turbo cars - but where it is ? - i didn't feel fil it this 260+ HP league I tested (Audi A5 was an exception - and is the best in the L/KM). Even the IS300 at 260 HP was better than the rest, for us. In Canada I didn't want to pay for the F3 package that come with the Adaptive Suspension, it will add 4600 to your invoice and you will need it in mountain areas or excesive speeds. It is my honest opinion, the tastes of the people are different - but I hope will not have a future where all the full loaded cars will be more appreciated than the ones that offers you the best drive experience for your money. I'm an IT guy, true agnostic when buying a car - looking to the car, not to the brand. I first tested the Acura TLX, coming from the Honda V6 Touring 2017 - it went from the top of the list to the last. It's important how you feel in the car and how it takes the road. If you want to go just straight, take the Kia Stinger, if you want the full experience, go to Lexus. Some compare it with the V6 or even V6 from competition (BMW, Audi, Mercedes, etc). I compare the best car for my budget, not with something that will cost me 30-50 % or more. Update (2021-04-07): I tested also the T5 and the T6 from Volvo S60. The T5 is weak and the T6 OK. The T6 with Polestar Optimization (will cost you around 1.4k) will make a good deal. Still love the handling of the Lexus, so for me it is the real deal. Update (2021-05-10) After some extensive reading and testing, I finally went for the F3 flavor for the IS 350 AWD 2021 - I will receive it in mid-June. The dealer was exceptional to switch the order (Laval, QC). The thing for the F3 is that you can have both worlds in the chassis : comfortable or sporty one. I'm not sure yet that the Sport or Sport+ make a noticeable difference. I also tested in the meantime the Tesla Model 3 - it seems that for me I'm not yet disciplined enough for the winter part, even if the AWD part seems superior in the electrical AWD models. Being an IT guy I was amazed by the technology on the 15" screen and from the driver perspective I liked a lot the instant torque and a very good handling. After the euphory passed, I found myself in a car that has no soul for me - super spartan interior - only the wheel and the screen, nothing else and the quality of the inside materials is very questionnable for me, even with the panoramic roof. I calculated that even if the car is a little more expensive, because I will not pay the gas and it seems that the service is cheaper than for IS 350 (so in total the Tesla will be cheaper), I simply decided that, at least for now, this is not a car for me, for us. I also questioned the fact that you don't have anything in front of you - you have always to look at the right to the screen and this seems not too safe for me.

I apologize, I like Lexus & Acura. However, all I see is a fancy Corolla in the IS. They say the TLX is a fancy Accord but I do not see that. Outta these 2 vehicles I'd have to go with the Acura but not the 4cyl. Wait for the Type S. I wouldn't technically mind the ISF with the V8 but I still see a Corolla. Don't get me wrong, Corolla is a great reliable car but who really cares. Have you ever heard anyone say, "That's a nice looking Corolla you got there!" Again, great reliable car that gets you to where you need to go but can't get any more boring.

I honestly can say that both cars are great, Acura has a good reliability as well as Lexus, the only thing that I would prefer the Lexus, why, because the resale value is better, and because Toyota beats honda at reliably. Also, if something is not broken, don’t change it. With Lexus you already know what you are waiting for, but this new car, who knows if it is reliable. If you go to car reviews, there are some Hondas that are having terrible transmission problems,

And since i have never owned any of the previous models the interior being basically the same doesnt bother me at all. The only thing i wish lexus should of done was put ambient lighting.. aside from that i think the car is perfect. I also dont mind at all the same v6 they have been using. How is it hard to choose a winner when the IS is from 2006

I was disappointed in the my latest experience demoing the current gen TLX. It felt tinny and accelerates without any excitement. It doesn’t compare to the outgoing V6 and for that reason the IS wins this comparison.

The BASE model TLX in the US [according to their webpage] is $38,000 US. [Which equals $48,382 Canadian] And the BASE model come with FWD. In Canada SH-AWD is standard on every TLX. The top model in the US cost $48,800. That's $62,146 Canadian. CANADA is getting a great deal on Acuras these days. [Relatively speaking]

that's correct, Canadians are getting a great deal on Acura's when you look at what Americans have to pay.

Considering how big the TLX is it's disappointing how little rear seat head and leg room there is. Not only that - the Accord 2.0T is bigger in the back and faster too. The TLX is why SUV's are so popular. Sedans should fit at least 4 BIG MEN!

Something about the TLX is just really off to me. The IS refresh is beautifully done, but definitely showing its old bones. That said, I'll take the IS.

Thanks for setting up the comparison videos and giving a heads up for upcoming YT vids on the IG channel because they give a better perspective to a car shopper. That said, if I was in the market I would without question go for the Acura TLX. It's quite unnerving that four cylinder car prices are creeping up to $50K range.....

Acura TLX hands down. Its modern sophisticated and the interior is amazing The lexus as usual is very over styled and I dont know, Lexus need to try a new look. That spindle grille is too much

The lexus makes me laugh so it would never be welcome in my garage. Like every other toyota it looks ridiculous and the fact that its ancient engine can barely keep up with 4 banger family sedans is hilarious.

One is rwd and the other is fwd. until Acura starts to make rwd cars instead of cars that look rwd then I’ll pass Now when the tlx type s with awd comes out I may take that. But base model wise I’ll take Lexus

TheBreakfastLover haha. I drove a 2019 tlx all wheel drive and it had the V6 with more horsepower but less torque than this thing has. It was fine but my old Pontiac G8 GT with a V8 and rwd was way more fun. I drive a challenger 1320 now. Sorry but rwd is king for a reason. Now when that type s comes out it will have almost as much power as my old 2009 Pontiac G8 GT and almost as much toque and weigh the same. Interior on Acura way better no comparison there on my old Pontiac or even current challenger but from a driving perspective rwd rules followed by all wheel drive. So in this comparison when the Lexus and Acura are fairly even ill go with the rwd platform every time regardless of what magic Honda thinks they have

TheBreakfastLover great none of that addresses my issues with fwd or a front wheel drive based car that is all wheel drive. I admit I haven’t driven it. I’ll also admit I’ve never driven a fwd drive car that was as fun as a rwd car and that includes previous Acuras.

@Raschaud Farmer well I can confirm that I’ve never had any problems in my Lexus’s...None whatsoever. Many of those boy racer sport cars from the 90’s are asking high money,MR2,Celica GT4 (now that’s real money to put out),Supra so don’t act like Acura integra is the holy grail asking $20k

    • Smooth Operator

@Smooth Operator mine had a sludge engine. However those Integras are classic and some ppl are paying 20k for those now. Nobody is spending big on a old 25 year old Lexus

@Smooth Operator any Acura I’ve owned as been bulletproof. Can you please look at the complaints which is mostly infotainment. Yes I remember the transmissions however my ES had sludge engine problem ppl hide about Toyota

    • Raschaud Farmer

      Raschaud Farmer

@Smooth Operator I’ve owned a Lexus ES300, I’ve owned a LS, RL, Volvo S60 , Legend. currently RDX and CX9. For years I’ve liked Acura better as far as driving dynamics. I’ve seen the biased ness of Lexus products. That ES had very part sharing of a Camry, that LS had the same switch gear as a Camry. The ride is the same between a Toyota and a Lexus. Acura ride is luxury and sporty something different from Honda. Ppl would belittle Acura when Lexus used more switchgear from Toyota and drove the same as like a Buick. I keep it real bro. Ain’t no lies or capping here

I just drove both and got the Lexus IS350F. It had a base of $45k, I got it for $4k off MSRP. That brought it to just $2k over the base TLX. A V6 and RWD will always be better than a turbo 4 FWD. Plus the TLX has an unusable back seat. The Lexus now has a touch screen with is vastly better than the Acura setup.

    • Raschaud Farmer

Backseat is larger in the TLX. SHAWD is better and drives better than Lexus RWD he’ll a FWD drives better than Lexus RWD

Huh, so I’m a long time viewer and I’d like to say I much prefer the reviews where you’re driving the car. In fact, I was surprised I was surprised the video ended when it did (a little lack luster). I want to hear the engine and see you interact with the car. To me that’s very important.

Owning Honda's since the mid 70's and just purchased a 2020 CRV, I'm sold on the TLX. Clever enough to buy a new release Japan built TSX manual in March 04. Just turned 90,000 and has been phenomenal.
