The 2021 Genesis GV80 Is What The Brand Needed All Along

The Genesis brand launched in 2015 but lacked one thing to drive sales- an SUV. In the “good things come to those who wait” department, the GV80 is a reward looking for upscale utility. Built on the same architecture as the G80 sedan, the GV feels like a completely different vehicle and looks to be the game changer Genesis needs. Tom Voelk drives a fully loaded twin turbo V6 all-wheel drive model.

💥 excellent review…was planning on getting the Mercedes GLS suv, but after driving the Genesis GV80 changed to that…..but, tried the “price quote service” (at 13:32) thinking I would get, well, price quotes. Instead, after submitting my contact info received many calls from dealers (2 in other nearby states!), asking me if I was interested in GV80, not to give me any price quote. Not helpful at all.

I cant be any more satisfied with our purchase. I got the v6 AWD drivetrain for my wife. Ride quality is gloriously magnificent, does not lose to any other luxury brands in this category, feels as if I am riding through clouds instead of hard asphalt road. Inside cabin is simple and yet refined and elegant - I much prefer this over some other makers' cluttered panels. Lastly, I notice many people doing double takes of this car. I am mightily pleased with the design - those on the design team (interior as well as exterior), along with the chassis and drivetrain team definitely nailed this one. I am also looking to purchase gv70 for myself as I prefer smaller vehicle when it comes out.

5:05 Driving Modes: In my new Blazer, the only difference I noticed in SPORT mode is the shifts are delayed IF you have a medium foot. If driving normally, there's no noticeable difference. If driving aggressively, no notable difference. I say big whoop to that in the Blazer!

Gv 80 won’t survive in Canada I barley see any I seen 1 only I think but Huyndai palisade I seen tons already this car won’t sell it’s great far but won’t sell it’s too expensive in Canada top trim almost 90lk plus tax where with that money you can get best Benz luxury like gle or BMW X5 m you can get best sport BMW X5 m with big horsepower and luxury so if I’m spending 87k I’m going for bmw I can even get 2020 bmw x7 with like only 20k on it for 90k which is new and new design same as 2021 and 2022 and bmw x7 is nothing like this car that’s pure luxury and power I’m just saying no matter how much hype this car got I don’t see it selling people will argue but let’s look at numbers this doesn’t sell stop pricy this should have been 60k 65k max no way 87k

Maybe I’ll buy this car in 2 years it will be then 50k it’s about 80 in Canada 87 depends what model but I think it will depreciate very fast or I’ll just buy Huyndai palisade which is an amazing suv for the price however I like massage seats and that one doesn’t have it by the way in Canada I barely see any gv80 they don’t sell much and won’t survive with those prices

Screens looks stupid though they took the width away and made it long kind of dumb for gps and maybe entertainment doesn’t work gls in that screen doesn’t function good as if it’s square you see more it does match the dashboard but in terms of functions I don’t like it the way it is most care companies have them a bit square you can take from the width a bit but not that much this is just long all cars should have wifi in their system I bought atoto s8 pro from amazing 480 bucks 7 inch and got wifi super fast and uses android system amazing I don’t know why car companies don’t put wifi in their system so people can enjoy browsing watch videos movies and use the full potential of screen instead of it being very limited to car options very few cars have wifi in their system I like the wifi options is very handy when you can search do emails things like that maybe even phone calls without your phone now if I bought such an amazing system for only 480$ not sure why car companies with 100000 cars can’t even put something simple as wifi that doesn’t cost anything and make it more user friendly instead of this limited garbage the android system I bought you can do every single thing you want in it just like the phone it’s so useful for anything you can connect to wifi anywhere and just do browsing watch ACURA movies whatever but some entertainment

Drove one this week. Don’t have Tom’s enthusiasm. I’m only 6 foot but found head room restrictive and the cabin felt small compared to X5 or GLE which they are targeting. Fast at the bottom end but passing acceleration wasn’t acceptable unless punching up to sport mode. Note paddle shifters do allow for manual shift! Lots of bells and whistles though if that’s what you’re after. Indicated speed limits are gps based, not camera shown so there always out of date.

Hi, Tom! I decided to watch this video after reading your NYT article about polarizing grilles. Not a Genesis fan -- or of Lexus and BMW, for that matter -- but I'd rank the grilles this way: Genesis, Lexus, BMW. (Had a 325i that I bought new in 2002 and kept all bills, but guesstimated fuel prices and mileage. For the 10 years I tracked everything, total cost was C$120,000. Never again.)

    • K C

@Driven Car Reviews With Tom Voelk Seeing the GV80 for the first time in person, I was unimpressed with the stying... too glitzy for my taste. I thought the Aviator looked stunning and had a more stately and elegant presence. I Preferred the Aviators piano shifter over the GV80 dial shifter and also thought the GV80 infotainment screen was too far away from the driver. The GV80 had a few more tech features than the Aviator. Both vehicles had hard plastic and fake metal in places. Behind the wheel I thought the GV80's performance and cabin were comfortable but nothing special. The Aviator's performance was outstanding and I noticed an immediate difference from the GV80. The Aviator engine was more silent, more powerful and the cabin just felt more serene than the GV80 cabin. I had no complaints about the GV80's performance and level of luxury...until I got behind the wheel of the Aviator.

I just purchased my GV80. It was difficult to get. And when I tell you it’s the best vehicle I have ever had, it’s an understatement. I can’t drive down the street without anyone asking me what it is. I love it more than the Bentayga. And the Telluride and Palisade aren’t even in the same lane. The quality of the drive, the quality of the materials, and the design is amazing. Best decision I made in 2020. I’m so happy with it. Can you tell?

One thing you failed to mention about people sticking to established luxury brands... is that a Genesis is in fact MUCH MORE RELIABLE than BMW or Mercedes. I'm a Hyundai owner and these vehicles, imho, are almost as reliable as Toyota nowadays. I've heard nothing but good things about the newer turbo I4 and V6. Plus you get that Hyundai/Kia warranty that they actually stand behind and will take care of you.

Yellow light about tech, you specifically say it does not have augmented reality navigation- but this car is one of very few that actually has that feature! It has 3d gauge cluster, it has remote parking, it has epic lane centering, it has awesome blind spot camera systems, it has active noise cancellation, and more! Complaining it is behind on technology is patently false and misleading!

Great review! Unfortunately for me, all of their vehicles don't have a cohesive design across their range and each vehicle they produce looks like an amalgamation of design from other manufacturers which is odd in my opinion. I'd never purchase any of their products. Maybe if they get their own design language going I'd consider it.

Yeah it's weird when people still compare genesis to any car specifically bentley these days most of them are grasping at straws to visually compare it to something. Someone in my town owns a g90 my heart drops Everytime I see it because those crest grills stand out so well it's funny I'm used to seeing other cars like bentleys but I don't ever look twice because alot of their designs have become so stale, the genesis new design almost looks as drastic as a concept that went straight to market without many changes kind of like the Lexus LC 500.

Trailblazer and Rogue are luxury? I get what I can from the manufacturers press fleet.

Tom, as someone who has driven sedans for years, I’m torn between this and the g80. Very similar, what are your thoughts?

I can only recommend looking at both to see where your heart takes your checkbook. And I would argue they are not similar, you will find that out when you test drive. Best of luck Mike.

at 1:21.."Chatter that it looks like a Bentley". It does. Why? Because former Bentley/Audi/Lamborghini designers helped design this. It's Luc Donckerwolke and Sangyup Lee at Genesis (Sangyup designed the new look for the Chevy Camaro). Look up their history..

@alexandergoldman Understood. Personally, especially after seeing two Bentaygas in Malibu yesterday, I also prefer the Genesis. There's some information I'm privy to about the design and designers that I'm encouraged not to share, a gentleman's agreement. I'll point out you can get similar quilted seat patterns in a Nissan Rogue and Sentra. Same with the new Kia Sorento I got today...

@Driven Car Reviews With Tom Voelk Fair enough. I agree that it doesn't look like a Bentley Bentayga, but I, like many others, see some styling hints that alude to the Bentley. General proportions, the grill, the diamond quilt patterns etc. I happen to think this GV80 looks completely different and is a cohesive design on its own and even better than the Bentley. My point is, people are not out of place if they say there are hints or elements of design that remind them of Bentley..

True. But that doesn't mean it looks like a Bentley. It doesn't. Just like it doesn't look like a Camaro (or Audi or Lambo either). Good designers create good stuff. The team (and it is a team) created something unique with the GV80 and they should be commended for that.

When the GV80 was first launched in Korea, they showed augmented reality navigation. Do we not get that in the U.S.?

Am disappointed by the fuel mileage but otherwise, a terrific car! Well done, Hyund-- er, Genesis! Am now very much looking forward to the GV70.

I've had a G80 for about 3 years now, and always have to explain what Genesis is. A family member even asked me if it was an Italian brand, so I think Genesis is in good company to be compared like that.
