The 2022 Acura MDX Is The Best Luxury 3-Row Under $60,000

Acura's MDX is not just one of the most popular models in the line, it's also Acura's largest and most expensive vehicle outside the NSX. With all that on the line, Acura redesigned their popular 3-row CUV to be one the best values in the luxury segment and simply the best luxury 3-row CUV under $60,000.

Honda/Acura blows my mind with the Push Button shifter. Incredible tunnel vision. Let's get rid of the shifter because it's in the way and will free up space, and replace it with a Track pad Arm Rest that looks like a shifter. Can't make this stuff up. I owned a 2001 MDX, 4 Honda's and I have to say I stopped buying them when they went to push button shifter.

I wouldn't say the MDX is selling better than the Lexus RX I think they're both on equal terms how ever I do see more Lexus than the MDX on the Road Is what I seen the most I live in NJ in my opinion both vehicles are evenly matched yes there's some differences between the two SUV

I just got Mine on 8/20/21. A 2022 MDX Advane in Fathom Blue Pearl with a Graystone leather interior . Acura named the color very appropriately : it casts different sheens in different light like the Fathoms of the Sea. Traded my 2019 MDX lease on a early termination offer from Acura which included a $1K Loyalty toward the deal. I don't usually use nthe term LOVE for things , I reserve that term for people / Family, but I REALLY LIKE this car!!! The muscular redesign, outstanding interior, completely new driving Platform with many suspension enhancements (Multi - Link Wishbone rear and now Front ), new Brakes, an enhanced and tweaked SH-AWD system with Real Torque Vectoring , probably the best in the business as a AWD system, very comfortable front seating ( I don't care about third row seating - Who really puts adults of any size in those seats in any Vehicle - it's just a stupid auto industry created mini-van marketing thing ), full LED lighting everywhere, and on and on....Select Sport Driving Dynamic Mode, and put the tyrany into DS, and you will see how spectactular this vehicle is. Compare this Advance MDX against the competitors : BMW X5, Audi Q7, Volvo XC 90, Genesis QV80 , Lincoln Avaitor, and the new Infiniti QX60 - fully loaded like the MDX and you will see what a Value this is... I would offer two things that IMO should have been incorporated : Acura has moved to the Intuitive Touch Pad for InfoT systems on the entire new line, should have been a touch Screen or even better BOTH Pad and Touch Screen; although there is plenty of HP power and Torque and it works Very Well with the new 10 Speed AT (which is much better than the 9AT in my 2019), with no Turbos, Acura could have "tweaked" it for a bit more HP / Torque , say 310 HP and 290ish Lbs of Torque, w/o a turbo. I am very Pleased with my new MDX.

The exterior styling is very good. No awkward angles. The interior, while roomy, is the weakest part. Piano black cannot go away quickly enough. The angles on the door cards look strange. I think I can get used to the touchpad, but there is a learning curve. The V6-only powertrain is the right call too. I can’t wait to try it with the turbo. And thank goodness for the double wishbone suspension and SH-AWD. It’s very good overall.

QX60 has impressive combined legroom and 3rd row headroom. If only nissan replaced the cvt with atleast the maxima setup. The Honda pilot has more 3rd row legroom than the mdx. Really torn between the Pilot AWD touring for $46k vs the MDX AWD tech package for $54k and the Lincoln Aviator base version for $55k.

I have a 2019 MDX Advance, a very good car. The infotainment , split screen is dated, but the new one takes care of that !!! Except for that Blasted Touch Pad . It was the primary reason for my to select the 2019 MDX over the 2019 RDX. Immediately after the test drive (the RDX advance is mover , great ride, and more or less a perfect size for me without little kids as a 69 YO ), BUT that Touch Pad Turned Me Off so much (and it was actually a few bucks more per month because it was brand new model), I moved on to the MDX. I looking forward to a 2022 Test drive (hopefully as a Loaner for a day or 2 to "really" see if I can live with that Touch Pad), with the new 10 speed AT. My MDX does have a slight hesitation when pressing down on the gas pedal. But I learned something on the web about all these newer CPU controlled cars. They all (my Infinitis included), "learn" your driving habits and applies that habit to the way the car drives. You can reset that in the following manner and it does work: While in Park, hit the power on button 2X Without stepping on the brake (otherwise the car will start), press down on the accelerator for 30 seconds . The release, and start the car normally, You will feel (at least I do), the car reacts with more response. As a Blog Poster said, after doing that, drive the car like a Banshee - hard accelerations for a few miles. It Relearns the new way of driving for awhile.

Hi Alex, when you are making the size comparison between vehicles, can you please include the vehicle’s turning circle or turning radius? For some of us who live in urban settings, with tight underground garages, etc., this information would be really helpful. For example, the 2022 MDX looks like a great vehicle. But it’s turning circle of 40.5 feet probably makes it less desirable for urban dwellers. But a potential buyer might not even know this until too late. This happened to me with a 2011 Chevy Malibu. Great car, but horrible to park with its land yacht turning circle. Ever since then I always check this little piece of information. Thanks

Good review. The ride quality would have to be really good to get over that clumsy infotainment system and that push button gear shifter. I have a 2014 and the infotainment has always been a nuisance . Acura is way off base with that system and I doubt that many think these are enhancements over touch screens and real shifters. I'm looking to trade in my 2014 but the quality of the mainstream brands has caught up to Acura. Shopping around I'm more inclined to go with the new Jeep Grand Cherokee L. No doubt the MDX is a better ride, but the interior and functionality of the Jeep seems comparable if not better. Would be interesting to see you compare the new Grand Cherokee with the MDX at some point. Maybe compare the new S power plant with the Hemi. Thanks

Lifehacks: Does the Odyssey have the new 10 spd AT? and the spectacular SH-AWD system ? My one hesitation as I consider an Acura Offer to early trade in of my 2019 MDX advance , leased to June 2022. I don't really need a 3rd ROW SUV as a 69 YO Grandpa , however, I love the extra space , ease of getting in and out (lots of spinal/ back issues), but don't love the MPGs. I might Opt for the RDX . Only turnoff on either vehicle is that PIA Touch Pad for the Infotainment control and NOT a touch screen. It was the primary reason that I did Not select the 2019 RDX 2 years ago.

Alex, I really enjoy your channel/reviews but I find myself cringing at your "mother-in-law" 'jokes'. They come off as rather sexist and misogynist by todays' standards, though I doubt that was your intent. This is a country that already has a reputation of not respecting older people and particularly women, and these kinds of ' jokes' are outdated. In regards to this particular review, I noticed that you omitted to talk about the Acura's reliability issues when compared to the RX which is a concern for shoppers. This 2022 Acura may have gotten better but comparing it to the Rx which got its re-design in 2016 and was not initially intended to be a 3rd row vehicle, seem like an obvious omission on your part.

People are simply tired of German cars - high priced, poor residuals, often unreliable and ridiculously expensive to own off warranty. MDX offers most of the same performance at a reduced price in a well built, reliable and high quality vehicle.

@Andy B By the way... I own an MDx and an ML550... My Mercedes has been more reliable... I take care of my cars ... Stop the stupid propaganda.... My Mercedes has never left me stranded on the road.... Yes luxury cars loose value... Live with it!!!

@Emeka Iheanacho So you are now saying that wealthy people are either stupid or just don’t care. We were stranded for 3 hours on a highway in our 2 year old Mercedes - never again!

@Emeka Iheanacho - show me how you feel after a break down on the side of a highway or losing over 50% in residual value while of course paying almost double the price of an MDX

$60K+ for an MDX is too rich for my blood. I had the 1st Gen MDX, which was a ground-breaking SUV. I liked the 2nd Gen very much. The generations that came after especially ones that came with the lame 9-sp ZF trannies made the MDX much less compelling.

Consumer Reports hasn't recommended the MDX and the new 2022 MDX is not recommended by Consumer Reports!

I don't know why car companies have drive modes in cars. Nobody bothers or remembers to use it. Every year there are new gimmicks that you have to pay for but never use.

I am very interested in this new MDX. Particularly because of the double wishbone front suspension. I'm a stickler for handling and any SUV just does not bode well in the handling department. This SUV on the other-hand is just what the segment needed if the driver/owner is a fan of good/great handling! It will be interesting to learn just how well this MDX drives. Good review as always Alex.

The Type-S engine should be standard. Although more luxurious (subjective), it’s hardly anymore desirable than a 2021 Toyota Highlander Platinum.

@Joshua Adams Toyota/Lexus FWD based vehicles use brake-based torque vectoring which drags the inside rear wheel instead of accelerating the outside rear wheel like GM Twin Clutch, Range Rover Evogue, Acura/Honda AWD.

I agree with you there, i finally chose the hybrid platinum because it is loaded with technologies and premium stuff. The fuel efficiency was the big + for the highlander hybrid (36 MPG).
