The 2022 Acura MDX Needs The Type-S Treatment to Seal The Deal (In-Depth Review)

Miles straps into the 2022 Acura MDX A-Spec, the latest generation of the best-selling 3-row luxury SUV on sale. With intense competition from new and old brands, Acura knew it needed to spice the MDX up significantly. Striking new bodywork and interior design helps the American-made, Japanese-branded MDX catch attention, but is sportiness only skin deep? Acura touts its all-new platform, double A-arm front suspension, 10-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive system (SH-AWD), and variable ratio steering rack as class-leading components. However, until the Type-S hits dealerships later this year, the MDX remains motivated by a carryover, naturally aspirated V6.
Is the 2022 Acura MDX ready to knock rivals like the Lincoln Aviator, Genesis GV80, and Audi Q7 down a peg or two? Find out in this in-depth review.

Where's the hybrid? The hot ticket appears to be a plug-in hybrid with 30 to 60 miles of range. Acura dropping their hybrid with the new model makes no sense...

Looking forward to your Type S review. Some of the other reviews of the released MDX did not have the same concerns about the transmission. I wonder if issues were tweaked before the release date or they just didn't pick up on it. Nice review.

The auto up-shifting before redline was probably a decision by the manufacturer in the software to reduce the warranty repairs they would have to make. Same reason that downshifts are so conservative, to avoid over-rev damage.

@james y there’s some glaring issues with the new MDX that are unacceptable. Unless you have one you won’t pick up on them on a test drive. I’ll name a few so you comprehend that Acura didn’t do their due diligence here. The car has a terrible AI it is unable to give you redundant info when one system is being occupied. For example: there is no way to hang up on a phone call or end a conversation from the steering wheel or console, you must make sure you are back in the conversation menu(which takes up the entire screen-if you are on route in navigation mode you will have to manually move the conversation screen to see the navigation again) if not, you have to carefully select the menu then scroll back to the conversation screen and end the call. It’s abhorrent. When someone calls you, you can’t simply answer the call on the steering wheel by hitting the voice prompt button. You must scroll through the menu to the call screen and answer the call there! Astonishingly terrible. If you engage the camera while in navigation mode on route, let’s say at a stop or intersection. It covers the entire screen in the camera and 360 mode, you can’t see your next turn. Let’s say it’s a multi tiered exit with several turns or a roundabout. It can be an issue. Most cars will show the front view and the navigation map on the other side, not Acura. You cannot use the Acura suite if you are using wireless CarPlay or even a active dash-cam(dash cams that require constant connection to WiFi typically ones that don’t have physical screen). And I know what you are saying: “no big deal”. Here’s the kicker, you can’t simply toggle between the connections. You must turn off each one from the Bluetooth setting then go through the menu and find the new item you are trying to connect to then reconnect then activate that item. Enjoy doing this while driving.

Great review. That infotainment trackpad sucks. Making the user interface more complex is not luxurious... it's dangerous. Just make it a touchscreen. It's actually quite interesting that the Japanese struggle to make good user interfaces, but the Koreans are great at it. Maybe that's why the Koreans dominate the cell phone market (Samsung/LG) and the Japanese can barely sell anything (Sony).

But, in all honesty there is no need only desire for more, more, more, more...but look back on civilizations or cities or countries that fell are the ones that always wanted more, more, more just like the huge dinosaurs, that went extinct, or great Africa before Europe, and now USA and China are looking for more, more, more and most of the ACURA reviewers.

Cmon man! What we need is a hybrid the very least and not another even worse gas guzzling engine. I hope and wish govt starts to penalize manufacturers for showing the balls to come up with another model without any sight to fuel efficiency or care for environment! Unless ofcourse acura is going to surprise everyone with all electric high performing type S..! .. else no matter how it looks but its all junk by 2030 in many markets. Acura said that front tunnel ventilation in the wind testing has proven to be more of a burden. Hence the reason they closed it.

You’re right. The touchpad is not designed for moving your finger across it (except in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto). You’re supposed to put your finger directly in the place you want to select on the screen. Moving your finger across the touchscreen may work, but as the video shows, it will be inconsistent.

Acura did a pretty nice job with this. My mom has a ‘16 and this definitely seems like a big step up. Sure, that infotainment system seems like it has a steep learning curve and a little more power on the non-Type S models would be welcome, but those are minor quibbles and definitely not deal breakers. I wish Acura would have paired this base NA V6 with a hybrid system to fill in some of that low end torque without sacrificing any fuel economy. But maybe that’ll come further down the line of this gen MDX. We’ll see.

Nothing special IMO. A-spec is mostly cosmetic for 60k. Infotainment is not the best. Same engine with less mpg. A nice upgrade but in the 60-70k price range it is not a value. Honda plus interior . Very reliable engine, nice transmission update with a great AWD system. If the base model came with a heated wheel and surround view for 50k(with AWD) that would be a good deal

I just test drove a BMW M40i suv and the price is 60,000 . The Aspec MDX is bigger, has more room, has real leather and not syntec leather like BMW. I’m considering buying it because it’s like getting X5 size space with 3rd row but with more goodies and features without loading up on price. I’m missing 50HP but I think it’s okay especially with the new transmission. It shifts so smoothly and fast. It gives it a totally different feel in shifting than my new ridgeline ( same engine/diff transmission)

@Andres Perez hooooo genesis another car brand that we dont have here for now... Genesis said that they would open the first official dealerships in large European cities (such as berlin) but the pandemic has blocked this, I hope in the future genesis will arrive here

I’ll see if the GLA is in the fleet. Unfortunately, I don’t get to pick colors or trims. I can only use what is available in the press fleet

Acura just had to start doing that ignorant touch pad interface. 🙄 just give us buttons and knobs with a touch screen like BMW does. I prefer the knobs and buttons, some want touch screens and bmw nails it by offering both. I HATE the touch pad crap and that alone keeps me away from Acura. They’re not at all intuitive, especially while driving.

Which interior did you like better between this and the dodge durango? Waiting for the type s trim, but comparing it to the 392 durango. Appreciate any feedback regarding interior quality and technology.

I prefer this cabin to the Durango’s. Quality of materials is higher in the MDX and the layout is more aesthetically pleasing. The Durango does have more leg and headroom in the 3rd row, however

@Arthur H , finally someone who is honest about their reliability. It was hard for me to believe that the Genesis brand was flawless when I was reading about problems over at Hyundai.

Prior to my current 2018 MDX Advance which is coming off lease, I had a 2015 Genesis Ultimate and I can tell you that the warranty was pretty useless as they simply wouldn’t fix anything anyway. Aside from the panoramic sunroof which came off the track and took weeks for them to get the part and repair, and the navigation which for months would not be able to position the vehicles location on the map (this took numerous visits and many videos for them to take action) they wouldn’t repair the weather striping that was a known defect on the roof, the door seals which were peeling away from the side of the doors and could not be reinserted into the brackets, forced me to pay $1850 to fix a hole in the exhaust panel (the bottom of the car is a series of rectangular panels and the piping is housed within them, the panels can catch and the damage could be severe since there is too much volume on the bottom of the car verses traditional designs) and refused to even honor the warranty on my “wheel and tire warranty” citing the gash in my tire wasn’t leaking air fast enough...

You are a Honda guy, 100k warranty shouldn't be your worry, you are not a true Honda guy, Kia or Hyundai owner are the one be worrying about warranty.

Rant I don't think so for a 60 k car. it's arsine to not have, Maybe it's a rant for a 25 k car. Acura should have done better. Now as for the touch pad I have a rdx 2019 it's sux. It's accident phorone. The Lexus has both A touch screen and the pad. Which to be honest when you can't get the pad to work it's a hell of a lot faster just to hit the icon on the screen. Also but you make like the out side design is light years ahead take a RDX modify it a little bingo you got a 2022 MDX.

Beautiful spec on the MDX. Can't overstate how the overall design is helped by the lack of roof rails. Wish all vehicle had roof rails as optional. The MDX is the vehicle that saved Acura and I thank you for your excellent review.

@Kuki Mel 27 I disagree many ppl actually are interested in Acura’s as they aren’t offered over there plus there regulations would make it hard now anyway , but dude doesn’t know what he’s talking about why would I want a 2.4 cyl pushing a big ass 3000+ vehicle be real
